The Brown County Humane Society is an Open Admission shelter, meaning that we accept any and all of Brown County's homeless dogs and cats. Most No-kill Shelters are really Limited Admission shelters, that only take in animals which have the highest likelihood of being adopted. Taking in only those animals for whom they have space - frequently those most likely to be adopted - is how most non-euthanasia shelters are able to operate. Because we do not pick and choose which pets are admitted to our shelter, we do sometimes have to euthanize pets. Currently only those dogs or cats whose behavior is dangerous and beyond our resources to rehabilitate and pets which are so sick or injured that we cannot afford to treat are euthanized. You can see by our numbers that we are doing an outstanding job of finding homes for all the pets that come our way. We will continue to operate as an Open Admission shelter with the goal of saving every homeless pet possible. Please consider making a donation to help us achieve this goal.
