Living in an apartment or small home doesn’t mean you can’t provide an amazing life for a dog. While having a large backyard can be convenient, what dogs truly need most is love, companionship, regular exercise and opportunities to use both their bodies and minds. In fact, many dogs thrive in apartments when their owners are committed to meeting those needs. With a little creativity, even small spaces can provide plenty of enrichment and fun.

Some ways to do this:

• Going on daily walks.
• If the apartment building is multi-level, going up and down stairs is a good cardiovascular workout. It is low impact and strengthens muscles.
• Playing indoor fetch with a plush toy or soft ball that won’t damage the walls.
• A controlled game of tug-of-war will burn the pet’s energy. Sessions should be short with clear rules such as releasing the toy when asked, in order to keep the game safe and under control.
• A flirt pole provides exercise in a small space. This toy resembles a fishing pole with a toy attached which encourages the pet to chase and jump thereby burning off energy. Six or more feet of clear floor space is needed.
• Playing hide and seek. First have the pet stay and then find you after you’ve hidden. The pet uses their senses of smell and hearing. A treat can be a reward.
• Hiding treats and favorite toys for the pet to find is good mental stimulation. Hiding spots can be gradually made more difficult.
• Training sessions whether practicing basic commands and obedience or learning new tricks is mentally challenging for a pet. It is also good exercise. A 15-minute session can tire out a pet more than a 30-minute walk. Rewards like a special toy can keep them motivated.
• Adding puzzle and enrichment toys. These toys require a pet to think, problem solve and work for food. They can be satisfying and calming.

The size of your home doesn’t determine the size of your heart. Every day, wonderful dogs of all ages and sizes are overlooked simply because potential adopters worry they don’t have enough space. The truth is that a caring owner who provides daily exercise, mental enrichment and quality time is exactly what dogs need to thrive.
